The Newport Chinese Community Centre successfully applied for a grant of £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund at the beginning of 2016, and has since used the money to complete a project called ‘Mudan (Peony) and Daffodil’.
This historical and cultural project has taken 18 months to complete. We conducted researches on the lives of Chinese people, both migrants and British born, in Southeast Wales. We have been working with individuals from all backgrounds and ages in order to compile a permanent archive of their stories. Through the project we explored the Chinese culture, language and history; their reasons of emigration and their lives today.
In preparation for the project, staff and volunteers received training on archiving & recording oral history, interviewing techniques, and making and editing of films. DVDs of the Interviews with English & Chinese subtitles have been produced.
There are approximately 10,000 Chinese living in Southeast Wales. The number has been increasing over recent years due to an influx of people from a younger generation in South East Asia and immigrants from China: the majority of whom are from the Fujian Province. It is very important to capture and preserve the memories and stories of these migrants and their culture before they become a forgotten past.
Mi wnaeth Canolfan Gymunedol Tsieineaidd Casnewydd gais llwyddiannus am grant o £60,000 gan Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri ar ddechrau 2016, ac ers hynny mae wedi defnyddio'r arian i gwblhau prosiect o'r enw 'Mudan (Rhosyn y Mynydd) a Chennin Pedr'.
Mae'r prosiect hanesyddol a diwylliannol wedi cymryd 18 mis i'w gwblhau. Mi wnaethon ni ymchwilio i fywyd pobl Tsieineaidd sy’n byw yn Ne-dwyrain Cymru; rhai sy wedi cael ei geni ym Mhrydain a thramor. Roedden ni wedi gweithio gyda phobl o bob oed a chefndir er mwyn casglu eu straeon nhw mewn archif parhaol. Drwy gydol y prosiect edrychon ni ar y diwylliant Tsieineaidd, yr iaith a’r hanes; eu rhesymau dros allfudo a’u bywydau heddiw.
I baratoi am y prosiect, roedd staff a gwirfoddolwyr wedi cael hyfforddiant mewn archifo a recordio hanes llafar, technegau cyfweld, a gwneud a golygu ffilmiau. Mi gynhyrchon ni DVDs o'r cyfweliadau gydag isdeitlau Saesneg a Tsieineaidd.
Mae tua 10,000 o bobl Tsieineaidd yn byw yn Ne-ddwyrain Cymru. Yn ddiweddar, mae’r rhif wedi codi achos dylifiad o genhedlaeth ifancach o Dde-ddwyrain Asia a mewnfudwyr o Tsiena: y rhan fwyaf ohonyn nhw’n dod o dalaith Fujian. Mae’n hanfodol i gofnodi a chadw atgofion a straeon y mewnfudwyr a’u diwylliant cyn iddyn nhw gael eu anghofio.
